Transitioning while at University
We respect that transitioning is a personal decision. You don’t need to inform the University of your decision to transition while studying at Liverpool John Moores University but we will be happy to provide support when or if you choose to.
The Inclusion Support team are your first point of contact to discuss what support you might benefit from at any point in your studies.
In addition, the Student Wellbeing team can provide more information on the range of wellbeing support which the University provides.
You can speak to a Wellbeing Advisor by attending a drop-in, Monday to Friday, 10am until 4pm in the Student Life Building (Copperas Hill) and James Parson’s Building (Byrom Street).
Changing your name with the University
The University recognises that students may wish to update the name recorded on University systems for a variety of reasons, including gender transition. The Inclusion Support team can provide advice and guidance on the practical considerations involved, including updating your Liverpool John Moores University ID card.
You can change both your primary name (the name used for official university records and documentation) or your preferred name (what you would like to be known as) via MyLJMU. Please note that your Primary Name will be used to generate your LJMU ID card in the first instance.
To update your Primary Name, the University requires evidence that you have formally adopted and are using the new name for official records.
The university will accept:
- an Enrolled Deed Poll
- an Unenrolled Deed Poll and other supporting evidence other supporting evidence showing use of your new name. For example, a Bank Statement, Mobile Phone Bill, Passport or Drivers Licence
- a Statutory Declaration
Please include a copy of your supporting evidence with your request via MyLJMU. A member of the Registry Services team will make contact with you, when necessary, to discuss supporting evidence.
You can request an updated LJMU ID card from Registry Services as part of the process of changing your Primary Name with the university. This will be issued to you once your details have been updated.
It’s important to note that a Preferred Name change is not the same as a Primary Name change. There will be some University systems which will still record your Primary Name. Your university email address and username will not normally be changed as a result of changing either your Primary or Preferred Name.
You may wish to inform your Personal Tutor or Programme Leader of your name change or if your pronouns change so that they can support you appropriately. Alternatively, the Inclusion Support team can contact a member of your academic team on your behalf.
Official documents, including graduation certificates, are normally produced using the Primary Name recorded on your student record at the time they are issued. If you transition after graduation, you can request a replacement certificate showing your updated name free of charge by contacting Registry Services.
