Grace Simpson (1920-2007)

• After WWII, Simpson trained as an archaeologist and, in the 1950s, she started to work in the archaeology department at Chester's Roman fort.
• Conditions within the fort were challenging, and she worked for long periods with minimal light and heating.
• Simpson is the co-founder of Rei Cretariae Romanae Fautores (RCRF), an international organisation focused on Roman Pottery. 
• Thanks to her work on Roman Samian ware, we are now able to trace pottery back to the craftsmen and workshops from the that period.
• Simpson published a book called ‘Central Gaulish Potters’ which is still referred to to this day.
