Intisar Soghayroun el Zein (1958-present)

Soghayroun obtained her PhD in Medieval and Post-Medieval Archaeology at the University of Khartoum in Sudan where she later became a professor.
Her work and research into the lives of the women of El Khandaq, a river port town, demonstrated the importance of their trade in weaving food covers, baskets and mats out of palm leaves and wheat stalks.
With her work she was able to broaden the focus of Sudanese archaeology beyond ancient palaces and temples to explore individual lives of the past.
In 2019, Intisar Soghayroun el Zein became Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research in Sudan.
