Manuel Blum (1939 - )

Blum was born in Caracas, Venezuela, in 1938, where his parents settled after fleeing Europe in the 1930.
He obtained his master’s degree in electrical engineering and computer science in 1961 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Having secured a PhD in mathematics in 1964 from MIT, Blum is now acknowledged as a pioneer in the field of theoretical computer science.
In recognition of his contributions to the foundations of computational complexity theory, Blum-Goldwasser cryptography, and CAPTCHA, he was the winner of the Turing Award in 1995.
He was appointed as the Bruce Nelson Professor of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University, Pennsylvania.
