Sara C Bisel (1932-1996)

• Bisel has a PhD in physical anthropology and was one of the first scientists to discover and identify human remains in Herculaneum, ruined by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD.
• Bisel has also worked on archaeological sites in the eastern Mediterranean.
• Her chemical and physical analyses advanced the ancient health and nutrition sections of paleodemography.
• She has taught at universities in the US and Greece and, in 1977, received a fellowship from the Smithsonian Institution.
• Bisel received the National Geographic Explorer’s ‘Outstanding Woman of Science’ award in 1988.
