Become a Citizen Scientist for the day and join us for a beach clean during the Great British Beach Clean week! This event is a collaboration between JMSU and LJMU Environmental Sustainability and Energy team.

As we pick up litter on the beach, we’ll be recording what we’ve collected. This data is key for the Marine Conservation Society as they monitor what is found on beaches all around the UK and Northern Ireland every year, which helps to track progress and drive policy change. Examples of how this data has been used in the past includes the introduction of the plastic bag charge, banning microplastics in personal care products, better wet wipe labelling, and supporting a tax on single-use plastic items.

Meeting Point: We’ll be meeting at the JMSU reception at 11.45am in the Student Life Building (upper ground floor) before we head over to Liverpool Central Train station. We’ll be getting the train to New Brighton (Wirral) before walking to the beach. The event is from 12pm-4pm and afterwards you’ll be free to return to Liverpool or enjoy the local area and the cafés, shops, or walks available.

What do I need to wear?

Sturdy shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty are a must (no flipflops!) and please wear clothing that is appropriate to the weather! Light waterproof raincoat if its cold, suncream if its hot and sunny. We’ll send everyone a reminder closer to the time when we know what the weather will be like!

Food and Drink

Please bring water with you and any snacks you require. There are also nearby shops and restaurants if you want to get food afterwards. JMSU will also cover lunch for a meal deal at Morrisons/nearby shop after the beach clean for all volunteers.

What else do I need to bring?

All equipment will be provided, and we’ll be paying for return train tickets for anyone who would like to attend. Feel free to bring some hand sanitiser, there are also toilets next to the beach to wash your hands.
