Recycle your old running shoes

The LJMU Sport Team has joined forces with JOGON on their mission to keep millions of training shoes out of landfill.
As part of the initiative, staff and students are being encouraged to recycle any old or no longer used running shoes, whatever their condition, by bringing them to the LJMU Sport Building and dropping them in the dedicated JOGON boxes in the reception area.
As part of our sustainability efforts, LJMU are hoping to collect 100 pairs of shoes for JOGON by Christmas.
It is estimated around 18 billion pairs of running shoes are sold in the world every year. That's the equivalent to two pairs of running shoes per person on earth.
Yet, there are millions who have no shoes and suffer terribly from sole diseases. It’s also estimated that over 30 million pairs of shoes end up in landfill every year. The JOGON donations aim to recycle and repurpose disused running shoes, many of which still have a lot of life left in them.
How to get involved
To get involved and donate a pair of your old running/training shoes, simply drop them off at the LJMU Sport Building reception, next to the Student Life Building, in one of the dedicated boxes.
The partnership with JOGON is one of LJMU’s many sustainability initiatives as we work towards tackling climate change.
We work closely with a wide range of partners to make a positive difference at a local, national and global level. Find out more on the LJMU Climate Action webpages.
