British Science Week shines a spotlight on absolute chemistry research

This British Science Week (8 to 17 March) we’re shining a spotlight on our Absolute Chemistry research which aims to foster chemical curiosity by raising aspirations in a range of learners, including children who have grown up in social deprivation.

Chemistry and science career aspirations for school children

Liverpool is one of the most deprived areas within the country and research shows that children who have grown up in this kind of environment are far less likely to continue their education, go to university and study science. 

The work from LJMU’s Absolute Chemistry Research Group is trying to tackle this issue. Led by Professor Linda Seton and Dr Andrea Mallaburn, the project aims to raise the aspirations of primary and secondary school children and show that a career in science can be for them. 

Over 5,000 school children have taken part in the project

The Absolute Chemistry Research Group has welcomed nearly 5,000 school children, over the past 10 years to take part in the project, giving them an amazing experience in science education and inspiring them to consider a career in science. 

The project aims not just to raise children's career aspirations but to also provide professional development for their teachers, improving their own science/chemistry knowledge, so that they can consider how to deliver science in an inspiring and engaging way. 

The sessions delivered are high energy, highly engaging and get children to consider the skills they would need to pursue a science career. Pupils also get to meet academics and student advocates studying science-related subjects at LJMU. 

The project is already having amazing results with many children who have taken part in previous Absolute Chemistry workshops now, as adults, choosing to study at LJMU.
