International Women's Day: digital finance research for women and minority groups in Nigeria

This International Women’s Day we’re highlighting one of LJMU’s latest research projects led by Dr Alison Lui, Reader in Corporate and Financial Law, as well as International Women’s Day events happening across campus.

Research into enhancing access to digital finance for women and minority groups in Nigeria

An LJMU research project has worked with women and minority groups in urban-rural areas of Nigeria looking into enhancing access to digital financial payment services and creating a more financially inclusive environment in banking, especially for women.

Project lead Dr Alison Lui, worked with Nigerian universities, surveying over 600 participants to find out the barriers of why some women don’t use digital financial payments.

So why don’t some women in Nigeria use digital financial payments?

Expensive data, unreliable connectivity and a lack of confidence in their knowledge and digital literacy skills were just some of the reasons why some women didn’t use digital financial payment systems, despite over 90% of those surveyed wanting to improve both their financial and digital literacy.

The impact of the research resulted in such a successful one-day workshop in Benin, Nigeria, working with women, that the Nigerian government and ministries now want to roll out the workshops and upscale the project to a national digital and financial literacy campaign.

LJMU’s commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals

The research is part of LJMU’s commitment to the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals with ‘no poverty’ and ‘reduced inequalities’ ambitions leading the project. You can find out more about LJMU’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals here.
