Explore the full range of postgraduate scholarships available to you.

LJMU offer scholarships to postgraduate students wishing to study with us from overseas. We do this in the form of tuition fee reductions and working alongside other external funding councils to produce many options for our students.

Am I eligible?

In order to qualify for one of the below scholarships, you must first meet a set list of criteria. Awards will be granted upon candidates meeting all conditions along with the presentation of an outstanding application and supporting documentation. 

Competitive scholarships have a limited number of awards. Students will be notified on the progress of their application by early July 2019.

Essential Criteria

Candidates must:

  • have an offer of study before they are eligible to apply for scholarship funding
  • not have already studied a postgraduate taught degree (unless applying for PhD study funding)
  • pay their tuition fee deposit before the 31 July 2019 to secure the scholarship
  • have the funds to cover the remaining living costs, travel and any other costs associated with studying at the University

LJMU funded scholarships

Achievement Scholarship

LJMU are pleased to be able to offer £2,000 tuition fee discounts to eligible applicants without a separate application process. All achievement scholarships are awarded automatically to all who fit the essential criteria as stated below:

  • meet the conditions stated in their full-time, postgraduate taught course offer letter
  • not also have funding from other external sources such as government or employer sponsorship

If you meet the above criteria, we will send an update of your scholarship status in the unconditional offer letter for your course. 

Chancellor's Scholarship

What funding is available via this route?

Full tuition fee coverage for 1 year of postgraduate study.

Who is eligible?

Students currently studying in the following institutions:

  • YPC International College, Malaysia
  • Sri Lanka Institute of Informational Technology (SLIIT)
  • Alam College, Malaysia

How to apply

Please contact your scholarship administrator within your institution for further information. Deadline for applications midnight (BST) 31 May 2019.

Global Enterprise Award - Business

What funding is available via this route?

This scholarship will award recipients with a £6,000 reduction in tuition fees for the first full year of study. Recipients will be expected to pay for the second year of study (including industrial placement) in full, however the cost of the second year is significantly reduced from the first study year at a cost of £3,000.

Global Enterprise Award - Engineering

What funding is available via this route?

This scholarship will award recipients with a £6,000 reduction in tuition fees for the first full year of study. Recipients will be expected to pay for the second year of study (industrial placement year) in full, however, the cost of the placement year is significantly reduced from the first study year, at a cost of £3,500. Students securing an industry placement will also receive a working wage for their contributions to the company which could contribute to living costs during this period.

LJMU China Partner Scholarship

What funding is available via this route?

£6,000 contribution towards tuition fees for 1 year of postgraduate taught study.

Who is eligible?

Students currently studying in the following institutions:

  • Shanghai Normal University
  • Shanghai University of Engineering Science
  • Jiaxing University
  • Changshu Institute of Technology
  • Yunnan Agriculture University

Students who have graduated from the above universities from 2017 to 2019.

For international students currently graduating from undergraduate study with a UK University in 2019. Students who have graduated from LJMU within the past 3 years (2017-2019) may also apply for this award.

Commonwealth Shared Scholarship*

Eligible courses

What funding is available via this route?

Full tuition fee coverage plus further funding - Full details on commonwealth website

All Commonwealth Shared Scholarship applications must be made via the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission’s online application portal by 4.00pm on 14 March 2019. Candidates should also apply for a place on the course through the university’s admissions application system separately.

Chevening Scholarship*

CARA Council for Assisting Refugee Academics - PhD study

What funding is available via this route?

This scholarship will cover the full cost of tuition fees for students working towards their PhD and will also include a stipend. Further details to be found on CARA website

Hodgson Law Scholarship

In association with the following courses:

The Hodgson Law Scholarship, which has been made possible through the generous benefaction of Elizabeth Hodgson, widow of the Liverpool Solicitor Joseph Hodgson, who expressed a wish to advance the education and training of lawyers who might work for the benefit of Merseyside. The Trustees wish Hodgson Law Scholars to benefit from education in Liverpool with a view to encouraging the intellectual growth of promising law students and the nurturing of close links with the City of Liverpool and the Liverpool City Region.

Key information

The Scholarship is only available to all prospective Overseas candidates (i.e. non UK, non EU) intending to pursue a postgraduate taught degree in law at Liverpool John Moores University

The Scholarship includes full tuition fees for a full-time postgraduate taught degree in law (LLM), and a stipend of £9,135.

Applicants must have completed or be in the final year of completion of a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent degree at a minimum 2.1 (UK Upper Second) or equivalent standard and have an excellent standard of English. 

Eligibility criteria

Applicants must be able to demonstrate:

  • Academic excellence
  • Evidence of an interest in legal and public service which may benefit the Liverpool City Region
  • Potential and ambition for future leadership
  • That they are not otherwise able to undertake a postgraduate degree at either institution

Liverpool School of Art and Design bursaries and study awards

In association with the following courses:

The Liverpool School of Art and Design offers students across all taught postgraduate programmes opportunities to apply for scholarships aimed at broadening student knowledge and experience.

The Michael Pugh Thomas and Julia Carter Preston Legacy scholarships consist of a number of £1,000 awards and are open to full-time and part-time home and international students who wish to study for a postgraduate qualification in art and design with LJMU. Part-time applicants can only apply once over the two years of their course. 

To be considered for the scholarship, you must submit a 500 word letter to apsadmissions@ljmu.ac.uk after being formally offered a place on a Masters programme in the School of Art and Design. The deadline for application for 2019 entry is Friday 14 June 2019. 

Please ensure you include your name, contact details, the full title of the course you have applied to study on and 500 words stating why you should be awarded the scholarship, the benefits it will bring to your studies and any exceptional circumstances you face in studying for a postgraduate qualification. 

The School's main travel bursary for existing students, The Susan Cotton Travel Awards, consists of three European Awards of £1,600 and two International Awards of £2,300. The awards are intended to help you undertake significant domestic or international travel in support of your work and personal development. The awards aren't necessarily about academic study, instead they focus on the spirit of travel and adventure. Previous winners of the bursary have travelled to a tropical island to experience life at its most basic, cycled the length of the Danube, spent a month in Morocco and inter-railed through Europe. Deadline for entry to the travel awards are Monday 14 January 2019.

SchoolApply Emerging Entrepreneur Scholarship

SchoolApply are awarding an international student up to $30,000 to contribute towards tuition fees. Students who have a same passion for technology and entrepreneurship are encouraged to apply on the SchoolApply website.

Toptal Scholarships for Women

Toptal are awarding five scholarships of $10,000 and weekly one-to-one mentoring to aspiring female leaders in Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe and Oceania. Application timelines are available on the scholarship website.

*Please note that the University does not offer family accommodation as part of the accommodation guarantee.  If those travelling on full scholarships wish to bring their families with them, the University can offer advice on privately owned accommodation in this instance but cannot guarantee rooms.
