LJMU offer scholarships to postgraduate students wishing to study with us from overseas. We do this in the form of tuition fee reductions and working alongside other external funding councils to produce many options for our students.
Am I eligible?
In order to qualify for one of the below scholarships, you must first meet a set list of criteria. Awards will be granted upon candidates meeting all conditions along with the presentation of an outstanding application and supporting documentation.
Competitive scholarships have a limited number of awards. Students will be notified on the progress of their application as soon as possible after application.
Essential criteria
Candidates must:
- have an offer of study and have firmly accepted their place before they are eligible to apply for scholarship funding
- not have already studied a postgraduate taught degree at LJMU (unless applying for PhD study funding)
- have the funds to cover the remaining living costs, travel and any other costs associated with studying at the University

LJMU funded scholarships
International Achievement Scholarship
We want to encourage ambitious students from countries worldwide to study with us at Liverpool John Moores University. As such, LJMU are pleased to be able to offer eligible applicants a £3,000 tuition fee discount towards each year of their studies*. All achievement scholarships are awarded automatically to all who fit the essential criteria as stated below.
Successful candidates must:
- be self-funded,
- meet the conditions stated in their full-time, postgraduate taught course offer letter,
- not also have funding from other external sources such as government or employer sponsorships,
- and be studying full at Liverpool John Moores University.
You do not need to apply for this award. If you meet the above criteria, the scholarship will automatically be applied we will send an update of your scholarship status in the unconditional offer letter for your course.
Please note, this award cannot be combined with any other LJMU scholarships or discounts. If you are eligible for two scholarships or discounts, we will automatically award you the one of the highest value.
*Scholarships are awarded in the first year of the programme and not applied to placement years or any resits.
Regional Scholarships
We want to encourage ambitious students from countries worldwide to study with us at Liverpool John Moores University. As such, LJMU are pleased to be able to offer eligible applicants from selected regions up to a £4,000 tuition fee discount*. All country scholarships are awarded automatically to all who fit the essential criteria as stated below.
- Country Scholarship A: Offers eligible students who enrol in September 2023 or January 2024 a £3,500 tuition fee discount.
- Country Scholarship B: Offers eligible students who enrol in September 2023 or January 2024 a £4,000 tuition fee discount.
Eligible students from all other international countries, who enrol in September 2023 or January 2024, will receive our International Postgraduate Achievement Scholarship.
Eligibility
Country Scholarship A: Be an International Fee Payer and a national of one of these countries: Bahrain, Canada, Cyprus, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Italy, Malaysia, Nigeria, Oman, Portugal, Spain, Thailand.
Country Scholarship B: Be an International Fee Payer and a national of one of these countries: Algeria, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Ecuador, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Panama, Peru, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey, Uruguay, Vietnam.
In addition, successful candidates must:
- be self-funded
- meet the conditions stated in their full-time, postgraduate taught course offer letter
- not also have funding from other external sources such as government or employer sponsorships
- and be studying full at Liverpool John Moores University.
You do not need to apply for this award. If you meet the above criteria, the scholarship will automatically be applied, and we will send an update of your scholarship status in your Certificate of Acceptance of Studies (CAS).

*Scholarships are only awarded in the first year of the programme and not applied to placement years, programmes with more than one academic year or any resits.
LJMU Climate Change Postgraduate Scholarship
Are you joining LJMU in 2023 as an international student studying MSc Climate Change and Sustainability?
Then you could be eligible for the LJMU Climate Change Scholarship.
The scholarship awards £6,000 discount towards tuition fees for two eligible international students.
Candidates must:
- have an offer to study MSc Climate Change and Sustainability for September 2023 intake
- be a self-funded international student
- not have already studied a postgraduate taught degree at LJMU
- have the funds to cover the remaining living costs, travel and any other costs associated with studying at LJMU
- be classed as an overseas student for fee purposes
Applications to apply for the scholarship for 2023/24 are now open and will close on Monday 15 May 2023.

Externally funded scholarships
Chevening Scholarship
Chevening scholarships award full academic funding for successful applicants on a competitive basis. Applications for 2023 entry are now closed. Applications will open for 2024, in the summer of 2023. To learn more about this award, please visit the Chevening website.
*Please note all international university scholarships are for programmes with fees of either £16,900 or £17,400 for the academic year 2023/24
*Please note that the University does not offer family accommodation as part of the accommodation guarantee. If those travelling on full scholarships wish to bring their families with them, the University can offer advice on privately owned accommodation in this instance but cannot guarantee rooms.
