Supporting and training postgraduate research students
Research students form the bedrock of LJMU’s vibrant research community and make a valued contribution to the intellectual life of the University. As a research student at LJMU you have the opportunity to become part of a community which is delivering world-leading and internationally-excellent research right across the institution. You can expect to be supervised by leading or internationally renowned researchers, to work in state-of-the-art facilities and to receive excellent training and support via your dedicated Doctoral Academy.
What we do
Our aim is to provide postgraduate researchers every opportunity to grow in confidence, intellectual capacity, ambition and creativity. The Doctoral Academy works alongside Schools, Faculties and Professional Services to harmonise the quality of the postgraduate research experience across the University. Our core responsibilities include:
- delivering an excellent Researcher Development Programme
- sharing good practice in supervision
- signposting specialist support for postgraduates across the University
- quality assurance and monitoring of student progress
More than 800 postgraduate research students are registered for MPhil or PhDs at LJMU.
The University’s engagement with postgraduate research students was identified as an area of good practice in HE Review 2016.
LJMU achieved a quality ranking of 62nd for Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014 (THES).
The proportion of LJMU research activity rated internationally excellent or above almost doubled, from 34% in RAE 2008 to 66% in REF2014.
