CPD Appraising Public Health Initiatives
Course aim
The Appraising Public Health Initiatives continuing professional development (CPD) module offers you the opportunity to:
- Explore and critically appraise public health initiatives and campaigns for a range of key areas of public health concern
- Examine key drivers for public health and approaches to health promotion
- Consider empowerment techniques to promote health and wellbeing in the individual
- Focus on Primary and out of hospital approaches to health promotion
- Consider the political drivers of public health in the UK, and internationally
The module is delivered in April and sessions take place are on a Wednesday afternoon.
Course content
You will work collaboratively with your peers to critically explore and appraise public health initiatives, further developing knowledge and awareness of key drivers.
There will be a focus on areas of public health as set out in the NHS Long Term Plan (2019):
- Prevention
- Smoking
- Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes
- Diet and Alcohol
- Antimicrobial Resistance and Vaccinations
- Cancer
- Mental Health
- Air Pollution
- Children and Maternity Care
- Gambling
You will develop critical awareness of societal impacts on public health and the challenges related to improving the health of the public.

Undergraduate degree
Applicants should hold a BA/BSc (Hons) degree in a relevant subject at a 2:2 level or higher. We also welcome applications from those who can demonstrate appropriate professional registration and/or experience in a relevant clinical specialty.
