The following requirements are a guide only and can differ depending on your course of study and your own personal experience.
LJMU is committed to becoming test flexible where this is in the best interests of students joining us from the US education system. We strongly recommend that applicants offer additional evidence of their suitability for university level for study in their chosen field. This may be evidenced by standardised tests, honours classes, IB courses, APs or university/community college credit bearing courses.
Where students cannot provide this evidence, the university will also consider references, relevant experiential learning and a strong personal statement evidencing suitability for your chosen programme. However, for a number of programmes, prior study in the form of AP, IB or honours classes will still be necessary to ensure that students have the depth of subject knowledge required to be successful in their transition to the UK system. If we believe it is in the best interests of the student, we may offer you a 4 year programme of study in the form of a degree with foundation year.
For us to be able to consider your application for direct entry to a bachelors programme the minimum entry criteria is a High School Diploma with a GPA of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale (unweighted).
We will review your application and may request additional evidence of your suitability depending upon the proposed programme of study. For example:
- Science/health related degrees: relevant sciences in AP, IB or honours classes at B+ or above
- Art based degrees: a portfolio may be required
- Performing Arts: an audition may be required
- Engineering: SAT or ACT may be required; where this is not possible due to COVID restrictions, high grades in grade 12 calculus may be considered, preferably honours/IB/AP classes.
Other subjects may require further evidence and admitting tutors may wish to request written work or interviews to support your application
Applicants require a 4 year Bachelors Degree with a minimum CGPA: 2.5/4.0 (equivalent to 2:2) or 3.0/4.0 (equivalent to 2:1) For SCS Programmes a GPA of 3.3 is required for programs that require a 2:1.
If you require further information, please get in touch with us.
Please see our Information on US Federal Loans and more section for details about federal and private loans, cost of attendance etc.
All international applicants must have an internationally recognised English language qualification, such as IELTS (International English Language Testing Service), Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic or TOEFL iBT. There may be a qualification that is specific to your country and, in most cases, this will be either listed above or on the previous page under 'English Language School Qualifications'. There may also be some exceptions to this requirement if you are from a majority English speaking country, in which case, a recent high school diploma or equivalent may be sufficient.
There may be other English language qualifications we can accept, depending on the exam board and period of time in which they were achieved. If you are unsure if you are in receipt of a suitable English language qualification and would like us to consider it, please attach the relevant documents to your application and we will assess this for you.
