Engineering research at LJMU 'very highly-rated'

Engineering research at LJMU is very highly-rated in the latest REF 2021 results.

Research in Engineering was adjudged to be 92% ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally-excellent’ by Research Excellence Framework 2021, the national audit of university quality.

Professor Jin Wang, Associate Dean for Research at the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, said: “LJMU has an exciting future ahead as we build on our vision to be globally recognised as the UK's applied research powerhouse in areas such as marine engineering and technology, general engineering, electrical engineering and electronics.”

Research outputs (118 were assessed) were rated 96% world-leading or internationally excellent and research impacts were rated 100% world-leading or internationally excellent.

Among those impact projects were the risk-based design and operation of large marine engineering systems, knowledge-based service and design for reliable and secure microelectronic products, innovation in abrasive machining technologies, and a decision-support system for transportation and logistics.

Moreover, the university has submitted 48 academic staff in engineering for assessment – more than 50% the number of staff returned in the previous assessment in 2014.

Professor Wang added: “We can be really proud of this assessment, and we want to thank all of our researchers and staff across the whole university who have worked so hard to contribute to the process. We'd also like to thank our external collaborators in the UK and beyond.”

- The REF is a system for assessing the quality and impact of research in UK universities and helps inform quality research funding that institutions receive. The 2021 REF results reflect our university’s international reputation for excellence in engineering research.
