Ramadan At LJMU: Celebrating Together With Iftar
Ramaday Celebrations
Ramaday is an opportunity to strengthen a sense of belonging amongst our community and appreciate what fasting may feel like while going about your day at LJMU. Non-Muslim participants were welcomed to take part in a voluntary fast during the day to better understand the experience of their Muslim peers.
Organised in collaboration with LJMU’s Islamic Society (ISOC), the LJMU Students’ Union (JMSU), and the Diversity and Inclusion Team, Ramaday saw Muslim and non-Muslim members of the LJMU community break their fast at sunset, share a hot meal prepared by the university’s Catering team and reflect on their experiences with conversation, talks and a quiz.
Reflections on Ramaday
Moni Akinsanya, Associate Director: Diversity and Inclusion, commented:
“We want every member of the LJMU community to feel they truly belong here. Ramadan is a deeply important and spiritual time for many of our Muslim students and staff, so it was fantastic to see members of ISOC, the JMSU Arabic Society and colleagues from across the University connecting with their non-Muslim peers at the Iftar. Through conversation and reflection, we can truly build mutual understanding”
Arwa Daaboul, President of Islamic Society (ISOC) said:
“I’m truly grateful for how the evening unfolded. I was touched by how many people came along to share the experience with us. Watching students and staff from all backgrounds take part made the event feel incredibly special.”
