Your reminder to register with a GP and check your vaccinations 2026
It’s important to look after your health when living away from home.
Vaccinations are more important than ever in helping to protect yourself and our community. The following vaccinations are recommended for university students:
- Meningococcal ACWY (Meningitis ACWY) immunisation
- Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) immunisation
- Flu vaccination (for certain at-risk groups)
- HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) Vaccinations
MenB vaccine and meningitis symptoms
While the Meningitis ACWY vaccine protects against four strains of meningococcal infection known as MenA, MenC, MenW and MenY, it does not protect against MenB which was the cause of a 2026 outbreak linked to the University of Kent.
The MenB vaccine is now being offered, until March 2027, to young people who were born:
- between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008
- on or after 21 July 2001 and are starting university
You'll be able to book an appointment online or find a pharmacy that offers MenB vaccinations for young people.
Early symptoms of meningitis can be similar to common illnesses such as flu or even a hangover, it’s easy to mistake meningitis for something else but it’s important that you get immediate help. Get familiar with the symptoms in case you or a university friend becomes ill. The Meningitis Now website offers clear information on symptoms and how to get help.
Register with a GP
It’s vital that you register with a doctor, often referred to as a GP, as soon as your place at LJMU is confirmed. GPs are your first point of call for most health issues.
If you wish, you can register now with Brownlow Health who have GPs in the city centre or at the Freshers Fair on Friday 18 September 2026. If you prefer, you can search for other local GPs using the NHS online GP finder.
If you are not from Liverpool, you can still see your own doctor when you go home.
