Submitting on behalf of students
Following a short review, the "Submit on Behalf of a Student" function in Canvas has been reassessed and remains available for staff with Tutor and Teacher roles.
The function, first introduced in 2024, allows staff to submit coursework on a student's behalf. Safeguarding students' personal data is a top priority for the EdTech team. Because this function can involve another student's personal information, we reviewed it with the help of the central data protection team.
As a result of this review we've agreed the following with the Data Protection team:

Staff using this function must take extra care to ensure the correct document is uploaded against the correct student, as this involves another student's personal information and any error could potential be a personal data protection issue.

If a submission containing personal data is uploaded against the wrong student, this must be reported to the Data Protection team via a breach form on the helpdesk. Also inform the EdTech team via the helpdesk and they will remove the incorrect submission.
