Have you left your bicycle on campus?
As part of our efforts to keep cycle storage areas safe, accessible, and well maintained, the LJMU Environmental Sustainability and Energy team has identified a number of bicycles that appear to have been abandoned.
If your bike has had a notice attached to it and you still use it, please remove the notice.
Any bicycles that remain unclaimed after Monday 28 September will be removed from campus.
Those abandoned bicycles will be refurbished and donated to community organisations where feasible, or recycled or otherwise disposed of if their condition does not allow for reuse.
Why are we doing this?
As part of the LJMU Active and Sustainable Travel Delivery Plan 2025 – 2030, LJMU aims to increase the number of staff and students commuting to campus through active travel. The delivery plan sets out a number of actions to help facilitate this. Early in the summer the team were made aware of a number of bicycle stores that had bikes which were not in use which meant there was not enough space for those wishing to cycle to campus.
The aim of the exercise is to:
- Free up valuable cycle parking spaces
- Improve accessibility for active travel users
- Maintain safe and tidy facilities
- Support sustainable transport initiatives
It is anticipated that this exercise will be conducted each year going forward.
Why are we waiting until end of September?
The end of September removal date has been planned to give students time to remove bicycles if they have left them on campus over summer and do not live in close proximity to collect them. The removal date has, however, been planned reasonably early in the semester to ensure those wishing to start the academic year by cycling will have the facilities available to them.
How are we contacting bicycle owners?
Physical notices are being attached to bicycles. Communications are being sent out through LJMU corporate communications channels and JMSU communications channels. This will ensure both staff and students are aware that bicycles are due to be removed and have the opportunity to check and remove their bike if it is currently on campus. For future years, communications will be sent to students before the end of term to remind them to take their bicycles home with them.
