Birute Galdikas (1946-present)

Galdikas is a Lithuanian-Canadian anthropologist.
Her main focus is orangutan conservation, especially the rehabilitation of orphans, and she is respected as the ‘go-to person’ for advice on their care.
In 1971, Galdikas created Camp Leaky, for researchers and rangers to use as their base camp.
She founded the Orangutan Foundation International in 1986 to help protect and preserve the rainforest habitat of orangutans.
In honour of her work, she received the Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement in 1997.
