Birute Galdikas (1946-present)

  • Galdikas is a Lithuanian-Canadian anthropologist.
  • Her main focus is orangutan conservation, especially the rehabilitation of orphans, and she is respected as the ‘go-to person’ for advice on their care.
  • In 1971, Galdikas created Camp Leaky, for researchers and rangers to use as their base camp.
  • She founded the Orangutan Foundation International in 1986 to help protect and preserve the rainforest habitat of orangutans.
  • In honour of her work, she received the Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement in 1997.
