Francis Cecil Sumner (1895-1954)
Sumner attended Lincoln University, California, and Clark University, Massachusetts.- He was the first Black person to receive a PhD in psychology and is often known as the ‘Father of Black Psychology’.
- Along with two others, Sumner worked at the core of the Howard University Psychology Department for 15 years, and also chaired the department.
- He conducted research that addressed racist biases in psychological research on Black Americans, despite being refused funding because of his race.
