Margaret Floy Washburn (1871-1939)

  • Studied at Harvard University and was the first woman to be awarded a Ph.D. in psychology.
  • Specialised in animal cognition and basic psychological processes, specifically sensation and perception.
  • Influential in comparative psychology and suggested bodily movements influence thoughts, which led her to develop a motor theory of consciousness.
  • The second woman to serve as the president of the American Psychological Association as well as the second woman to be a Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences.
