Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis (1893-1972)

  • Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis was an Indian statistician who is best known for his distance theory.
  • He developed fractal graphical analysis, now a widely-used technique, and used by Mahalanobis to compare the socioeconomic conditions of different groups of people.
  • The University of Oxford awarded him the Weldon Memorial Prize in 1944 in honour of this work.
  • He founded the Indian Statistical Institute, contributing to the design of large-scale sample surveys.
  • For his work, the Padma Vibhushan, one of India’s highest civilian honours, was bestowed upon him by the Indian government in 1968.
