Supporting your mental health and wellbeing

University life can be rewarding and fulfilling, but it can also bring periods of pressure, change and uncertainty. Looking after your mental health and wellbeing is just as important as maintaining your physical health, and support is available at LJMU whenever you need it.

To mark World Mental Health Day (10 October), we are highlighting some of the services, resources and opportunities available to help staff take positive steps towards supporting their wellbeing.

LJMU Connectors

LJMU Connectors are staff from academic and professional services teams across all campuses who provide friendly, confidential peer-to-peer mental wellbeing support.

Whether you are experiencing a difficult time, feeling overwhelmed, or simply need someone to listen, Connectors offer a safe, non-judgemental space to talk. While they are not counsellors, they can help signpost you to appropriate support services and resources when needed.

Further information about the role, who they are, and how to arrange a confidential conversation with one of them, can be found on the Connectors webpage.

Wellbeing Resources

At LJMU, we are committed to supporting the wellbeing of our staff through a wide range of services and resources.

All staff and students have free access to Togetherall and SilverCloud, clinically approved online wellbeing platforms that provide confidential and anonymous support. Available 24/7 and accessible from any device, these services offer practical tools, guided programmes and online communities designed to help you manage your wellbeing whenever you need support.

Further information about the full range of wellbeing support available can be found on the Staff Wellbeing Hub.

In addition, staff can access the Vivup Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) service to speak to a trained counsellor 24/7, 365 days a year. Support is available by calling 0330 380 0658 and identifying yourself as an LJMU staff member, or by visiting the Vivup website.

Staff Events and Activities

Taking time away from work demands, connecting with colleagues and trying something new can have a positive impact on wellbeing. Throughout the year, the Staff Wellbeing Team coordinates a range of events, activities and workshops designed to support physical, mental and social wellbeing. These sessions provide opportunities to learn new skills, explore interests, connect with colleagues and take time for yourself.

Visit the Staff Events page to discover upcoming opportunities and get involved.

LJMU Move

Physical activity can play an important role in maintaining good mental wellbeing, helping to reduce stress, improve mood and increase energy levels.

The LJMU Moves+ app encourages staff and students to build movement into their daily lives, whatever that looks like for them. By connecting a fitness tracker or compatible device, users can earn points through everyday activity and redeem rewards ranging from free refreshments to memberships and other incentives.

You do not need an LJMU Move Membership to use the app and start collecting points.

For those looking for additional opportunities to stay active, a Move Membership provides access to gym facilities, fitness classes and a variety of activities across the city, including swimming. It is a great way to support both physical and mental wellbeing while meeting new people and trying new experiences.

Remember, support is available

Mental health challenges can affect anyone at any time, and seeking support is a positive step. Whether you want to speak with a colleague, access online resources, attend a wellbeing event or reach out for professional support, LJMU offers a range of services to help you look after your wellbeing throughout the year.

This World Mental Health Day, take a moment to prioritise your wellbeing and explore the support available to you.
