The benefits of part-time jobs
Work experience, whether directly relevant to the career you want to go into or not, will be really important to help develop your skills and experience. Employers often look for applicants with a range of experience and examples to draw upon to demonstrate specific transferable skills, many of which can be gained through part-time jobs.
It is important to use a range of strategies when searching for part-time work. Consider approaching organisations directly to enquire about jobs. If you are looking for retail, bar work or hospitality positions you should try and hand your CV directly to the manager and then follow this up with a phone call or by calling in again to see if they have reviewed your CV. Many larger retail organisations advertise their positions online only so make sure you check out their websites.
You could also register with some local recruitment agencies. For a full list, search on yell.com and read through our guide for advice on how to use these services.
Once you have registered with an agency it is important to stay in touch with their consultants on a regular basis to find out if they have available work.
I think one of the most important experiences I had was probably my retail experience. I got a part-time job as a customer assistant at a supermarket in my second year at university and my communication skills just changed completely. That more than anything was really important for when I faced interviews in the future as I was much more confident and able to articulate myself better.
