Green impact

The Green Impact programme empowers staff and students to take meaningful action for sustainability. By participating, you can help create a greener campus while gaining valuable skills and recognition.

Green Impact is a UN-award-winning sustainability programme developed by SOS-UK, which recognises and awards teams for taking positive action. The purpose is to build a community of staff and students who are learning about sustainability, what they can do, and who are working to create a positive impact.

Through the programme, we aim to:

  • increase staff and student knowledge on what they can do
  • encourage, support and empower everyone to take action
  • embed sustainable actions in everyday behaviour to create new norms
  • enable staff to support LJMU’s Climate and Sustainability Plan objectives
  • provide recognition and awards for the positive impact our LJMU community is making

How it works

Teams will sign up to the easy-to-use online platform where there will be a toolkit of actions you can complete. The platform is also mobile friendly so you can access anytime, anywhere.

There will be a number of actions across different areas such as energy, waste and travel. There will also be customised actions for different areas of work such as labs. You’ll be able to filter the actions to find those most relevant to you.

Teams can then log and evidence completed actions, assign them to different team members and track the team’s progress. There is also a leaderboard so, for those with a competitive streak, you can see how other teams at LJMU are performing and how you compare!

You’ll have from the start of October to the end of April to complete your actions. Student auditors will then check your evidence, and final awards will be issued in the summer.

Why join

There’s lots of reasons why you should sign up! By creating a team and joining you could:

  • make a tangible impact on the environment
  • tailor the sustainability actions to those that suit your role
  • take action flexibly – you can choose which actions you do and when you want to complete them
  • facilitate team building
  • respond to student demand
  • provide students with a career enhancing opportunity to get auditing training and experience
  • potentially save money and resources
  • receive recognition for your efforts

25/26 feedback

We ran Green Impact for the first time in 2025/26. We had a great response from our staff participants and student auditors:

Seeing staff doing voluntary work alongside their main duties showed me how great LJMU is, and as a student at LJMU I feel proud to have lecturers with innovative initiatives, I've been encouraged by your example, even if unintentionally. Thank you for the hard work!

Student Auditor 2026

We like the competitive aspect of it as it encourages you to complete more action so we can continue to have a high score compared to other teams. The toolkit website is easy to use and understand, we were worried it would be complex but we found it very easy to submit our evidence. We would encourage people to join as it is a friendly competition and you get to meet with other teams to discuss ways to implement sustainability.

Staff Team 2026

Student auditors

We need students to audit our staff teams! As a student auditor, you will receive ISEP-approved training from SOS-UK, gain valuable experience conducting audits thereby boosting your CV, and receive a 50% discount on an ISEP student membership. You will be required to do at least one audit which will last between one and three hours and will take place after the examination period in May 2027.
