SHAPE Sustainability Impact Project

The SHAPE Sustainability Impact Project is a collaboration between SOS-UK, The British Academy and LJMU academics and sustainability staff that aims to demonstrate the importance of the arts, humanities and social sciences in tackling sustainability challenges.

We are looking for passionate group of students to take part in developing impactful solutions addressing local sustainability challenges. This is a unique opportunity to boost your employability, tap into key networks within arts and humanities, and social sciences, and connect with other students all while making a positive impact.

Who can join

SHAPE is a British Academy term for Social Sciences, Humanities and the Arts for the People and the Economy or Environment. The project is therefore open to students from the disciplines listed below.

What it involves

Students will work in interdisciplinary groups of around three to four people from October 2026 to end of February 2027.

The time commitment is expected to be at least one day a month; however this is flexible around your studies.

In March 2027, teams will then present their challenges and solutions at an in-person conference in Manchester!

Other key dates include:

• On Wednesday 30 September at 1pm we’ll be hosting an introductory online session.
• On afternoon of Wednesday 7 October, we’ll be holding an in-person session where you will meet other students taking part, will get into teams, meet those leading the teams, and can start to think about projects!
• On Wednesday 21 October, teams will join a regional session at University of Liverpool to meet representatives from SOS-UK, the British Academy and students from other universities who are taking part.

What the challenges will be

A range of challenges across different sustainability topics might be presented to you. Examples include connecting people with nature to enhance biodiversity; reducing waste, encouraging reuse, and improving recycling; and encouraging more sustainable behaviours in the community.

• Contribute to the project flexibly around your studies and other commitments.
• Receive training and bespoke support.
• Earn a digital badge for your social media and CVs demonstrating your participation in the programme.
