Professor Rafid Al Khaddar recently became the 29th President of the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM).

Rafid, who is  Professor of Water and Environmental Engineering and Head of the Department of Civil Engineering at LJMU, has been a member of CIWEM for over 20 years. He has regularly acted as a Professional Reviewer for new prospective candidates for Institution membership. He sits on the Trustee Board and a number of panels, is an active member of the Editorial Board for the Water and Environment Journal and acted as Chair of the North Western and North Wales Branch in 2003. He is also a Visiting Professor to a number of international universities in Turkey, Egypt and Iraq.

The theme for his presidential year is; 'How education can help communities to understand the importance of environmental issues to promote proper sanitation and safe water resources.'

Speaking of his ambitions for the coming presidential year, Rafid said:

“The biggest environmental problems we face today have water resource issues at their heart, causing irreversible environmental and social damage across the world. CIWEM and its membership should play a leading role in sustainable water resource management utilising its wealth of history and expertise to tackle these problems.”

“I believe that many water issues are still widely ignored and I hope to lead the way in spreading the word on such issues. Education is therefore key and I intend to highlight this on my travels around the world as CIWEM President.”
