Looking after your mental health and wellbeing
World Mental Health Day
University life brings both opportunities and challenges, and it is natural to experience periods of stress or uncertainty. This World Mental Health Day (10 October) we are raising awareness of the support available to our student and staff community, at LJMU, including steps you can take to look after yourself, events and support at the university, plus our commitment to the University Mental Health Charter.
Support for our LJMU community
Wellbeing resources
LJMU provides all students and staff with free access to clinically approved wellbeing resources Togetherall and Silvercloud. These platforms can be accessed 24/7 from any device and provide confidential and anonymous support.
LJMU Move
Download the LJMU Moves+ app. The free app incentivises our students and staff to participate in movement, in whatever way works for you. You can earn rewards for your everyday movement, by gaining points from a connected fitness tracker and cashing them in for a range of rewards, from free coffees to memberships. You don't have to have an LJMU Move Membership to use the Moves + app and gain points.
You can also purchase a Move Membership which provides you with access to our gym, classes and a variety of activities across the city, including water sports, bowling, climbing and many others. The LJMU Move membership is heavily discounted for our LJMU community at just £40 for students and £50 for staff for the entire academic year (1 September to 31 August) allowing you to benefit from a healthy lifestyle in a welcoming environment where you can stay active, meet new people, and enjoy a variety of activities.
Student support and events
University life can be exciting and rewarding, but it can also feel overwhelming at times. Deadlines, exams, social pressures, financial worries, or simply adjusting to a new routine can take its toll. If you need support, please just ask.
Student Life and Wellbeing
The Student Advice and Wellbeing team offers a range of services, including in person appointments on our City and Mount Pleasant campuses, bookable appointments in person and online, wellbeing events throughout the year and access to resources. You can find out more on the Student Support page.
JMSU Wellbeing Forum
Are you passionate about student wellbeing? Join John Moores Students Union at their Wellbeing Forum on Thursday 9 October, 5.30pm to 6.30pm. This is a unique opportunity to share your feedback, meet fellow passionate students and talk to LJMU staff members who are dedicated to supporting student wellbeing. The event is free and you can sign up via the JMSU website.
Staff support
At LJMU we are committed to providing a holistic package of services and resources to support our staff's wellbeing. You can find out more via the Staff Wellbeing Hub.
- For immediate support, call the 24/7 confidential telephone helpline on 0330 380 0658
- Make time for yourself by attending one of our Staff Events

Maintaining positive mental health and wellbeing is vitally important for everyone in our LJMU community, and it is vital that everyone knows how they can access the services and facilities available. There is a huge amount of work going on to ensure that LJMU is a mentally healthy campus and I would urge anyone who is struggling in any way to reach out and access support.

LJMU's commitment to mental health and wellbeing
University Mental Health Charter
As part of our ongoing commitment to mental health and wellbeing, LJMU have been members of the Student Minds University Mental Health Charter since 2021. The Charter will see LJMU continue to adopt a whole university approach to mental health and wellbeing to improve practice, policy and strategy across the university. Find out more about the Charter and our approach at LJMU.
Suicide Prevention: Zero suicide alliance training
Talking about mental health and particularly suicide is essential in keeping people safe. As part of the university’s ‘Suicide Safer Framework’, which outlines our plans for prevention, intervention and, where required, postvention, LJMU has launched the ‘Zero Suicide Alliance’ training, designed to empower individuals to start conversations, and where suicide is a risk, to signpost to relevant services. The training is designed for students, staff and anyone working in higher education.
Developed by Mersey Care NHS Trust, alongside Angela Samata (an LJMU Honorary Fellow who is an expert by experience) and LJMU students, the training takes just 20 minutes and could save a life.
