New facilities at James Parsons Building

LJMU’s James Parsons Building is getting a host of new facilities to enhance the teaching, learning and research environment for students and staff.

The university is delivering a major £5m project over the summer to further improve the building at the heart of the City Campus.

The works will provide:

  • New teaching rooms on the first floor
  • New staff accommodation on the first and second floors
  • Two brand-new large IT suites on the third floor
  • A relocation of multi-faith room to the third floor during the redevelopment of Henry Cotton Building
  • Refurbishment of the student social area at the café at the rear of the building
  • Improved heating and ventilation

Enhancements already made

The works are the third phase of improvements at James Parsons Building over the last couple of years. The first phase saw the transformation of pharmacy facilities, followed by last year’s delivery of a brand-new student zone, staff lounge, a makers’ space for the School of Engineering and further developments in the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences.

Professor Raphaela Kane, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Health, Innovation, Technology and Science, said: “This programme of work will significantly enhance the facilities we provide to students and staff across all of our schools in the faculty and ensure they have the best possible environment for outstanding teaching, learning and research.”

Liz Gatheral, Director of Estates Development and Campus Services, said: “The enhancements to James Parsons Building are a major investment by LJMU into ensuring our estate is efficient and delivers what our community needs.

“This is the third year of ongoing improvements to the building and the projects to date have been positively welcomed by staff and students who have benefited from the new and improved facilities. The works being delivered over the summer will further help to ensure they have an outstanding university experience at LJMU.”

Timescales

The refurbishment works will begin in May and are scheduled to be completed by September 2025.

Interim arrangements

For staff whose office accommodation is affected by the refurbishment, alternative work spaces are available over the summer.

Hot desking will be available in the GERI Building and Peter Jost Building from Monday 12 May. Further details will be provided to staff who are affected.
