New LJMU journal aids postgraduate researchers in learning about academic publishing

A new journal, led by our postgraduate researchers (PGRs), has launched at LJMU to better support PGRs to gain real experience in the world of academic publishing and editing.

The ASPIRE Journal – Assiduous Student Projects and Impactful Research Excellence – captures the essence of student creativity, involvement, and the diligent pursuit of research excellence. It is a peer-reviewed, multidisciplinary academic journal created by students, for students, with a mission to celebrate and elevate the voices of LJMU’s academic student community.

The editorial team

The editorial team consists of PGRs Cherene de Bruyn (School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Science/Forensic Research Institute), Sarah Klingberg (School of Justice Studies) and Samantha Barker (Humanities and Social Sciences).

Together they wanted to break down the barriers regarding publication for students, creating a platform that is diverse and inclusive, and which celebrates student hopes and ambitions towards achieving academic success.

The journal is backed by an Advisory Board comprising several experienced LJMU staff, including:

  • Dr Martin Brooks (Head of Research Excellence and Research Strategy)
  • Professor Linda Seton (PBS)
  • Cath Dishman (OJS Manager)
  • Katherine Stephan (Library Services)
  • Victoria Sheppard (Doctoral Academy)

Journal aims

The introduction of the new journal will support the publication of high-quality undergraduate and postgraduate research from students at LJMU; enhance the visibility of student research at LJMU; and foster a collaborative academic environment between PGRs and other students (master's and undergraduates). It is a collaborative platform where LJMU students can share their research and where PGRs can gain training and hands-on experience in the publishing process.

Call for readers, reviewers and authors

PGRs interested in being part of the reviewer team can email the editorial team to express their interest. LJMU students and PGRs are also encouraged to visit the ASPIRE website to register as a reader to be kept up to date about publications and events.

The call for publications and submission of manuscripts to be included in the first volume of the journal is now open. ASPIRE accepts original articles, review articles, conference reviews, exhibition reviews and critiques, interviews and book reviews for publication. Current LJMU students are invited to submit outstanding first-class assignments—essays, reports, or dissertations—for consideration.

Logo design competition

As a brand-new journal, the LJMU student and PGR community are invited to help create a bold and brilliant logo that captures the spirit of ASPIRE.

The deadline for submission of logo designs is 1 September 2025.

For more information about the Journal, the submission process or the reviewer and editor guidelines, please visit the ASPIRE website.
