More than 100 young people take part in summer university

Over the past month, more than 100 young people, aged 14 to 17, from across the UK have taken part in LJMU summer schools aimed to inspire those from underrepresented backgrounds to consider higher education.

Year 10 residential for care experienced pupils

Pupils from schools across the North West took part in the annual Year 10 residential, targeted specifically at those in local authority or residential care.

The residential saw 14 and 15-year-old schoolchildren spend two days and one night on campus staying at one of LJMU’s approved student accommodation sites.

The annual event aims to give participants a real insight into student life, introducing them to the concept of higher education, all while helping them see the inclusive community nurtured by LJMU.

Pupils also heard from a current student with experience of the care system. They spoke about the dedicated package of support offered to them by the university.

I just wanted to say thank you so much for giving us this opportunity. She absolutely loved it and has not stopped talking about the experience. She spoke so positively about all the staff and is eager to attend university.

Year 12 residential visit

Year 12 students from Northern Ireland, England and Wales, participated in a three-day residential visit to LJMU.

The programme focused on students interested in business and nursing offering them a taste of university life.

Students stayed in student accommodation, attended academic lectures, and enjoyed evening entertainment in the Liverpool city centre. They also had the opportunity to visit various LJMU facilities, providing a thorough experience of university life.

I thought university life would be scary and I wouldn’t get along with people, but my experience at LJMU was brilliant, I enjoyed it so much.

Outreach and further support at LJMU

The summer schools are part of LJMU’s Outreach programme to inspire students from underrepresented backgrounds across the UK to consider higher education study.
