Let's talk about student support at LJMU

Whether you are just starting your degree, or you’ve been at LJMU for a little while, our student support teams are here to help, not to judge, and you’ll always be listened to no matter how big or small your question or challenge might be.

There’s lots of support available in ways that best work for you – online, in-person, self-help and anonymous options.

Here’s an introduction to, and reminder of, the different support available to ensure you do well at LJMU.

Student Advice and Wellbeing

Arrange an appointment with an advisor

From help with student funding and disability support to having someone to talk to if you’re feeling homesick, our friendly Student Advice and Wellbeing team offers a wide range of support to all students.

Based in the Student Life Building (Mount Pleasant Campus) and the James Parsons Building (City Campus), Student Advice and Wellbeing reception staff are available Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm, if you need help finding the right support or want to find out more about our services. And appointments can be booked with a range of advisors – including those who can support you with your mental wellbeing - in person, by telephone or virtually via Microsoft Teams. Use our online booking system to arrange your appointment.

Online self-help resources

You also have free access to Togetherall and Silvercloud, clinically approved online self-help resources covering a range of common challenges that students might experience as part of navigating university life. These resources can be accessed 24/7 from any device and are designed to support your health and wellbeing. Plus, on Canvas you can access a range of practical resources on topics such as managing stress, improving your sleep, and connecting with others. Look for the ‘Student Life and Wellbeing’ module on your Canvas dashboard.

Report + Support

We also have an online reporting tool called Report + Support so that any member of our university community can report incidents of harassment, bullying, stalking or sexual misconduct. Reports can be made anonymously, or you can include your contact details so that our full range of support is available to you. The university has staff in place to respond to any reports, including our Specialist Support team who work with students who are experiencing sexual violence, domestic violence or stalking.

Cost-of-living and financial help

Scholarships

Every year we award a range of scholarships (that don’t need to be paid back), from £1,000 to £5,000, to encourage our new students to reach their potential. Find out more about the range of scholarships available at LJMU.

Student support fund

Our Student Support Fund is available year-round and can assist with the cost of things like food, students’ union society contributions, internships or your rent. The Money Advice team look after the fund and can answer any questions you might have about accessing this support. Apply for help through the fund.

Home essential giveaways and food vouchers

Throughout the year, the Money Advice team also gives away home essentials like laundry detergent, washing up liquid and shower gel. They also provide rewards like supermarket vouchers for participating in their special events on campus alongside your Students’ Union, JMSU. Events will be advertised through your email student newsletter and on the main LJMU and Student Life, Advice and Wellbeing’s Instagram accounts, so be sure to check your inbox regularly and give our accounts a follow online.

20% off Core Cafes

You can use your student ID card to get 20% off at all Core Cafes on campus. 

Santander student support funds

We’ve teamed up with Santander who offer grants, scholarships and financial awards to our students. Look out for promotion of our Brighter Futures opportunities through our student newsletter emails and on LJMU’s Instagram account throughout the academic year.

Academic help

Skills for Success Course

Our Skills for Success Course has been designed to support you across a range of areas, including the development of your skills for academic study, supporting your use of digital tools, and providing tips for creating a healthy study routine. You can access the module at any stage from your Canvas dashboard and explore the sections most relevant to your studies.

Academic Success team in our Libraries

Our Academic Success team is based in both our Mount Pleasant Campus and City Campus Libraries. They can advise and support you with a range of academic and library skills from clarifying assessment expectations, essay writing and referencing, to finding the resources you need. They also have specialist maths and statistics support, as well a team of peer mentors who are there to help throughout your university studies.

Personal Tutors

Your Personal Tutor is also there to help guide you through your academic life at LJMU. Personal Tutors are staff from your area of study who are there to support your success, like providing guidance on course and social issues, making sense of assessment feedback, and referring you to the correct teams to best support you. IT support

IT Services in the Student Life Building

We have a dedicated IT Services team available to help you throughout your time at LJMU with support available in-person, online or by phone. Whether it’s installing software, help with your IT account or accessing high-performance computers, the team has got you covered.

Come and see the team in-person on the upper ground floor of the Student Life Building where you can access other IT facilities like 3D printing, Virtual Reality headsets and podcasting facilities.

Help wherever you are

You can also call the IT team if you’d prefer to get help over the phone during the day, call 0151 231 5555. Or you can get IT help from wherever you are by using our online IT guides, logging a request for help through LJMU Assist, or chatting to our AI assistant LJ for 24/7 support.

Loan laptops, PCs and computer software

We provide over 2,000 PCs and loan laptops to ensure that all students have computer access for their studies. You can log on to a PC either in our Libraries or IT suites across campus and our loan laptops (we provide both Windows and MacBooks) can be borrowed for one day or in some instances for up to four weeks. Student Futures and Unitemps

Our Student Futures team – made up of careers, start-up and recruitment staff – looks after all things careers and employability related.

Careers and employability chats

The team offers in-person or online one-to-one careers meetings where you can get help with CVs, applications and interviews, or discuss your career ideas and develop a plan to attain the skills and experience necessary to realise it during your time at LJMU.

They also hold regular ‘Ask Student Futures’ drop-in sessions every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon at their Careers Zones in the Student Life Building and James Parsons Building for of-the-moment, careers quick queries.

Webinars and events

You can attend online career webinars and employer events or come along to large-scale recruitment fairs to meet and network with employers offering a range of opportunities including internships, placements and, for later in your journey, graduate-level roles – see what’s coming up.

Paid internships

Student Futures also offer paid internship opportunities; Co-Creation Internships are available for you at any level of study, while Discovery Internships are available from second year, where you can work for a local organisation on a project that you can fit around your studies. All internships are managed through Unitemps - our very own on campus recruitment agency - so make sure you register to be eligible.

Help finding part-time work

Unitemps at LJMU supports you to easily access part-time, temporary or flexible work that fits around your studies. All you need to do is register with them online to see the latest available jobs and to submit your applications. Unitemps are based at both the Student Life Building and James Parsons Building Careers Zones.
