  1. Barry Fowler interview – Elder Dempster

    Barry Fowler joined King Edward the Seventh Nautical College, London in May 1952. Barry spent four years as an apprentice and eventually rose to the position of captain at Elder Dempster Lines.

  2. Barry Groombridge interview – Elder Dempster

    Barry Groombridge joined Elder Dempster Lines aged 16. Barry’s first voyage was from London to the United States, via West Africa. The voyage lasted nine months.     Moni Akinsanya is Associate Director of Diversity and Inclusion and has worked at LJMU for over 16 years. She has led on many race and gender equality projects at the university and driven meaningful change, making sure the voices of underrepresented groups are heard.

    James is a mental health nursing graduate, and one of many nursing students who went above and beyond during the Covid-19 pandemic, putting their training into practice to support the NHS during their studies.

  5. Dr Scott Foster

    Scott is the PhD programme leader with responsibility for the doctoral students in our business school. Having followed a path into the miliary at just 16, gaining only one GCSE, Scott came to study for a degree at LJMU later in life, eventually gaining a PhD before becoming a member of staff and now inspiring others to follow in his footsteps.

    Flutter Shutter is an award-winning female run energy efficiency company which has been operating for over 13 years in the city of Liverpool.

  7. Graham Austin interview – Elder Dempster

    As a Printer for Elder Dempster Lines, Graham Austin sometimes worked 18-hours a day and was responsible for printing the menus, programme of events and stationery for the ship’s various departments. Listen to Graham's interview.
