Barry Groombridge joined Elder Dempster Lines aged 16. Barry’s first voyage was from London to the United States, via West Africa. The voyage lasted nine months. Anyika graduated in economics from LJMU in 2008 and was in the very first class of scholars in the Sports Scholarship programme that launched in 2004. She went on to become an Olympic-winning track and field athlete.
Beth graduated with a degree in sports science in 2007 and was in the very first class of scholars in the Sports Scholarship programme that launched in 2004. She is renowned as Britain’s greatest-ever female gymnast.

Jo is a finance officer and in 2023 celebrated 35 years of working for LJMU. She’s worked across many different departments during her career, and as the university has evolved. During more than three decades of dedicated work, Jo has made lasting friendships along the way and even met her husband here too.

Professor Peter Toyne was the Rector at Liverpool Polytechnic between 1986 and 1992 and the first LJMU Vice-Chancellor, once it gained university status, from 1992 to 2000. His vision for the polytechnic and then the university benefited not just students but Liverpool too.
