Applying for a Global Citizen placement
Students wishing to participate in an international volunteering opportunity with one of LJMU's approved providers must apply directly to the organisation of their choice. The provider is responsible for assessing applications and confirming whether you have secured a placement.
Students are also responsible for making their own travel arrangements and ensuring they have appropriate insurance and healthcare cover for the duration of their placement. Depending on the destination, this may include obtaining visas, vaccinations and any other documentation required for travel.
Once you have been accepted onto a programme, your chosen Provider will supply further information to you about placement requirements, pre-departure preparation, accommodation, and in-country support.
Global Citizen Bursary
For the Academic Year 2026/27, the Global Opportunities Team can provide funding to up to 30 undergraduate students who are taking part in an opportunity with our volunteer providers. A £500 bursary will be awarded to successful applicants.
Students can apply for the Global Citizen Bursary on the Global Opportunities Portal, accessible via MyLJMU.
- Students must register their interest on the Global Opportunities Portal to their chosen volunteering provider.
- The Global Opportunities Team will approve the students’ interest, which will give the student access to the application questions.

Applications can be submitted during our two rounds of funding.

Funding is limited and competitive
The Global Citizen Bursary is only available to undergraduate students participating in an international volunteering opportunity with one of LJMU’s approved providers.
LJMU’s role is limited to the administration of bursary funding
Students are responsible for applying directly to their chosen provider, completing all application requirements, communicating with the provider as necessary, and ensuring they meet any programme deadlines, eligibility criteria and participation requirements.
