Student testimonies

Jessie, Zoology Student, Global Citizen

“My time with Travelteer in Sri Lanka was one of the most meaningful experiences I have had during my degree. I spent a month volunteering in Hikkaduwa, Sri Lanka, as part of Travelteer’s Marine and Wildlife Conservation Project.

My volunteering included caring for rescued turtles by feeding and washing them, treating their injuries and maintaining their tanks. Alongside this, I took part in beach and river clean-ups, collected mangrove seeds to help support coastal resilience, and helped to garden and harvest crops at local schools and orphanages to provide food for their meals.

Looking back, I am grateful not only for everything I was able to contribute in Sri Lanka, but also for everything the experience gave me personally and I know these are qualities that will continue to help me throughout the rest of my degree, my future career and wherever my travels take me next. I gained valuable skills in teamwork and communication, became much more independent and developed a confidence in myself that I did not have before.

Sri Lanka showed me that travelling can be about so much more than seeing a new place, it can be about learning, contributing, challenging yourself and connecting with people.”
