Why Study abroad?

Internationalise your LJMU degree

As part of your undergraduate degree, you can spend either one semester or a year studying abroad at one of LJMU’s partner universities across the globe, in Europe, North America, South America and Asia. As well as experiencing a new culture and enhancing your studies, receiving formal recognition as part of your degree

Benefits of study abroad

Enhance your career prospects

Gain life experiences and skills that are actively sought after by employers which can be a talking point at interviews, or the part of your CV that makes you stand out from the crowd. Students who go abroad are 20% less likely to be out of work, 10% more likely to be in ‘graduate jobs’ 6 months after graduation, compared to those who don’t go abroad.

Skills acquired often include:

  • adaptability
  • a go-getting attitude
  • an ability to communicate (including inter-culturally)
  • problem solving/analysing

  • drive and resilience
  • self-awareness
  • time management
  • planning and organisation
  • gaining a global mind-set

Add a new dimension to your degree

Bring a different perspective to your subject by studying in a different cultural context.

Expand your networks

Develop networks and opportunities (professional or otherwise) which can last well beyond the Study Abroad period.

Learn a language

Depending on where you go, you could learn to speak another language or improve your existing skills. Nothing like living in a language to learn a language!

Enrich your degree

Study Abroad students do better – students who go abroad are 19% more likely to gain a 1st in their degree.

Challenge yourself

Gain confidence and experience by pushing yourself beyond your usual comfort zone. You will often find you learn the most from the more challenging situations you face.

Have fun

Learning should be fun, and there is no better way to learn than by studying abroad. Read about other LJMU students’ experiences living and studying abroad, all done within a supportive educational environment with support from both LJMU and the host institutions.
