Course aim

This course is designed for registered healthcare professionals who want to strengthen their understanding of disease processes and apply that knowledge to clinical practice.

You will explore how disease develops, how genetic and environmental factors contribute to patient presentations, and how pathophysiological changes influence symptoms, disease progression and clinical decision making.

Through patient cases and applied learning, you will develop your ability to connect underpinning science with real clinical situations. This will support more informed assessment, diagnosis, intervention planning and evidence-based decision making in complex areas of practice.

This CPD also forms part of the PGCert Independent Prescribing and Clinical Decision Making, which combines applied pathophysiology with clinical assessment, decision making and prescribing.

Course content

The course aims to equip registered healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills to apply pathophysiology theory to practice through a series of patient presentations.

You will explore the applied pathophysiology of commonly presenting conditions across body systems, including mental health, respiratory, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, neurological, mental health, haematological and immunological conditions.

You will develop your ability to:

  • understand how genetic and environmental factors affect physiological mechanisms and contribute to disease
  • apply pathophysiological knowledge to patient presentations and clinical cases
  • consider how disease may progress and how this can inform evidence-based judgement
  • understand how therapeutic interventions can influence underlying pathophysiology, support symptom control and reduce the impact of disease

The course also provides an opportunity for interprofessional learning, helping you to learn alongside other healthcare professionals and apply pathophysiology within the context of contemporary healthcare.

Teaching and learning

The course uses a variety of teaching and learning approaches designed to engage and inspire you. These may include lectures, seminars, group work activities, and tutorials, and will involve both on-campus and online learning. You will usually attend timetabled teaching for half a day per week.

As you progress through the course, you will develop and use progressively higher-order and mastery-level skills, as well as further developing subject-specific knowledge. This will support you to become an inquiring and confident learner, fostering independence in the acquisition, and application of, theoretical knowledge.

You will be:

  • Empowered to acquire knowledge through supported, independent learning - this will include being directed to scholarly activities that will prepare you for scheduled teaching activity
  • Supported in engaging in learning within your own time with directed activities that are provided for you through our online learning platform  - this will be supported by dedicated and experienced academic staff will actively, iteratively, and directly engage with you to facilitate and guide your learning

Assessment

You will undertake a 2-hour written examination that allows you to demonstrate your understanding of disease processes and apply pathophysiological knowledge to patient presentations, including why disease develops, how it may progress and how interventions can support symptom control and disease management.
