The course offers flexible learning, designed for working professionals. Delivered part-time through LJMU’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) Canvas, it’s the ideal way to gain a Level 6 bachelor’s degree, while balancing professional commitments and family life.

BSc (Hons) Health Studies is an 18-month part-time course delivered through distance learning. 

Health Studies is a dynamic and multidisciplinary subject that explores the health and well-being of individuals and communities across the entire lifespan. Throughout the course, you will examine health in its broadest sense, including: 

  • physical and mental health 
  • illness and disease 
  • social, cultural, and environmental factors that influence well-being. 

Health Studies is rooted in a range of academic disciplines, providing you with a comprehensive understanding of health at local, national, and global levels. You will engage with evidence-based research and innovative concepts to explore real-world health challenges and solutions.

Core modules

Artificial intelligence and technology in health care
20 credits

This module focuses on the transformative impact of artificial intelligence and technology within health care. Students will explore the integration of AI into diagnostics, treatment planning, and health management, as well as the challenges and ethical considerations it presents. Students will critically assess the benefits and limitations of AI, preparing them to engage with technological advancements and their implications for health care. 

Navigating ethical dilemmas in modern health care
20 credits

This module examines the ethical principles and professional responsibilities that shape decision-making in health care. Students will engage with real-world ethical dilemmas, examining professional codes of conduct and the impact of ethical reasoning on service user care and outcomes. The module emphasizes critical thinking, ethical reasoning, and the practical application of ethical frameworks to complex health care scenarios. 

Causes, impacts, and strategies to address health inequalities
20 credits

This module explores the complex causes of health inequalities and their impact on different communities. Students will examine how social, economic, and environmental factors contribute to disparities in health outcomes. The module will examine inequalities across various demographics and evaluate interventions designed to promote health equity. It will enable students to understand the key drivers of health inequalities and the strategies needed to address them. 

Empowering Wellbeing Through Health Promotion
20 credits

This module delves into health promotion strategies and the role of communication in empowering healthier lifestyles. Students will learn the theories behind health promotion and develop skills to design effective campaigns for diverse populations. The module emphasizes the use of various communication channels, including digital media and community outreach, with a focus on cultural sensitivity and inclusivity. Through practical case studies, students will learn to develop impactful messages that advance public health goals. 

Global Health Dynamics
20 credits

This module studies global health and its implications for health care. Students will explore how global issues affect health policy and practice within the UK and worldwide. By understanding the interconnections between global health trends and local practices, students will assess how international health dynamics can influence the effectiveness, sustainability, and equity of the UK healthcare system. It will enable students to support patients from diverse cultural backgrounds in a holistic approach to care with a key focus on addressing health disparities through the lens of equality, diversity, and inclusivity (EDI). 

Transforming health through evidence-based practice
20 credits

This module investigates the critical importance of evidence-based practice (EBP) in modern health care. Students will critically examine the principles and processes of EBP, exploring how it integrates clinical expertise, service user values, and the best available evidence to enhance health outcomes. The module will focus on how evidence-based practice informs clinical decision-making, shapes health policies, and improves care. This module prepares students to be advocates for high-quality, evidence-informed care by understanding and applying the concepts of EBP in diverse health care settings with an understanding of how this informs research in practice.

BSc (Hons) Health Studies is delivered fully online via our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), Canvas.

The self-paced learning provides the flexibility to complete your studies during your own time. This is important so you can continue with your professional and personal commitments.  

You will learn through a mix of:

Although this top-up degree is self-paced, it is important to ensure you have plenty of time and a quiet place to study so you can fully engage with the materials. 

Dedicated personal tutor, plus study skills support

Every undergraduate student at Liverpool John Moores has a designated personal tutor, who is there to help you stay on track to achieving your degree. You will find out who your tutor is during your virtual induction.   

The Academic Achievement Team offer advice and support on studying at level 6 and with your academic writing through online self-study resources, virtual classes and one to one appointments through Microsoft Teams.

Assessment varies depending on the modules you choose, but will usually include a combination of exams and coursework.

You will have both formative and summative assessments throughout your course.

Facilities are provided to students through the university's Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), Canvas, utilising the latest technology.

You will engage and learn through the VLE, providing an exciting, innovative and interactive environment throughout the course. You will also be actively engaging with your classmates through the VLE, supporting inter-professional learning and providing peer support.

Successful completion of the course will enable you to apply for senior roles within health care that require a degree qualification. It also supports you in applying for postgraduate (Level 7) study in the future.

Fees

Tuition fees for home students beginning their studies in September 2026 will be £9,790 for the 2026/27 academic year, subject to Parliamentary approval.

In England and Wales, tuition fees for home undergraduate students are set in accordance with the Government’s regulated fee cap. The Government has confirmed that this cap will be £9,790 for 2026/27 and £10,050 for 2027/28, in both cases subject to Parliamentary approval.

The Government has also stated that from the 2028/29 academic year onwards, the fee cap will be adjusted annually in line with inflation. As a result, tuition fees in future years may increase accordingly. We will provide confirmation of any changes as early as possible in advance of each academic year.

The fees quoted above cover registration, tuition, supervision, assessment and examinations as well as library membership and student IT support with access to printed, multimedia and digital resources including programme-appropriate software and on campus Wi-Fi.

Additional Costs

In addition to fees, students should also keep in mind the cost of:

How to apply

Securing your place at LJMU

To apply for this programme, you are required to complete an LJMU online application. You will need to provide details of previous qualifications and a personal statement outlining why you wish to study this programme.

Students will need to:

  • be a registrant on the NMC or HCPC register
  • have completed a relevant healthcare diploma and be credited with 120 credits at level 4 and 120 credits at level 5, or have the international equivalent 

Additionally, you must have access to a computer with the following technical requirements to be able to complete the course: 

  • Webcam, microphone and speakers 
  • Windows 10 or a Mac OS X 10/9 or later 
  • Intel Core i5 Processor (or better) (Intel M Processors are not recommended) 
  • 4GB RAM 
  • 20 GB available hard drive space
