In memoriam: Professor Andy Ross



It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected and sudden passing of Professor Andy Ross. 

After studying Quantity Surveying at what was then Liverpool Polytechnic, Andy initially, pursued a career in the construction industry and qualified as a chartered quantity surveyor before changing career direction to follow his real passion for education. 

Andy joined the university in 1991 and was an energetic, respected and popular member of the academic community in the School of Civil Engineering and Built Environment until his retirement in 2021.  

He was a leading member of the UK and international academic community in his field of Construction Project Management and was a driving force in the Association of Researchers in Construction Management (ARCOM), publishing widely in his chosen specialism. He was a regular contributor to practice and policy discussions relating to surveying and construction education, working closely with various professional bodies such as the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and the Chartered Institute of Building. 

Andy was conferred as Professor in Construction Project Management in 2016 and following his retirement he held the position of emeritus professor with the university. 

As well as being a dedicated researcher, Andy was totally committed to developing an inclusive learning culture and he supported his students with passion and focus, developing many innovative learning tools to support professional, construction education. 

Andy was in the vanguard of the university’s development of degree apprentice (DA) provision and he led the development of the first DA programmes for the university. He was also very active internationally and was instrumental in the development of collaborative programmes in Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Ghana amongst others. He leaves behind a great legacy for students and academic colleagues.

A dedicated and competitive sportsman, Andy regularly participated in cycling and running competitions and achieved a deal of success in his sporting endeavours. 

Andy was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and he will be sadly missed.
