Postgraduate Research Festival celebrates LJMU doctoral work
The LJMU Doctoral Academy welcomed 160 delegates to our annual Postgraduate Research Festival.
This year’s festival theme, ‘Play, Pause, Rewind: The Rhythm of Research’, encouraged participants to reflect on the playfulness and creativity of research.
Workshops led by visiting speakers, LJMU academics and PhD alumni explored storytelling, grant writing, Artificial Intelligence, creative science communication and navigating the post-PhD landscape.
Keynote Dr Christopher Matthews (NTU) closed the day with a keynote on single-minded social science and ‘Getting Good Research Done’. The soundtrack for the day was a collaborative ‘PGR Playlist’, created by delegates.
At the heart of this event was the chance for LJMU’s PGR community to share research and make connections with peers from different disciplines. With over 60 PGRs presenting their work in poster or Three Minute Thesis (3MT) formats, this annual festival provides a valuable space to exchange ideas and find out more about the exciting range of research going on across the University.
Joel Kearney from Sport & Exercise Sciences won the 3MT competition, and now goes through to the quarter finals of the UK competition in July, with his presentation on ‘Walking freely: the case for markerless motion capture in clinical settings’. For a full list of winners, runners-up and People’s Choice awards in the poster and 3MT competitions, see the PGR Festival website.
The event planning was led by a dedicated committee of PhD students, Madeline Rowe, Pouria Motalebi, Delaram Yazdani, Louise Rimmer and Eleanor Cantwell, with support from the Doctoral Academy.
Professor Keith George who helped to judge the 3MT and closed the event, said “PGR conference days shine a light on the best of universities – our students working with expert guidance to develop, learn and to contribute to knowledge generation and exchange. Today was a great exemplar of the work of our PGR community. My congratulations to all the students who helped run, present and support a wonderful day.”
