Licence to share: making sense of research data licensing

As part of Open Data Week in November, the Open Research team is excited to host an online session with Creative Commons dedicated to helping researchers understand how to licence and share their research data effectively and ethically.

The event will run between 2pm and 3pm on Wednesday 12 November 2025. A recording will be made available for those unable to attend live.

We invite postgraduate researchers, research staff, and anyone involved in producing or managing research outputs, to join us for this practical session on open research data licensing and sharing.

Guest Speakers

We’ll hear from Taylor Campbell, Project Lead, Open Science at Creative Commons, and Jan Ainali, Research Analyst, Open Science at Creative Commons.

Together, they’ll guide us through:

  • How to select and apply the correct licence for different research outputs
  • The role of licensing in open research and how it aligns with funder mandates
  • Best practices for licensing datasets
  • Common challenges and how to overcome them

Whether you're preparing to deposit a dataset, publish a data paper, or support researchers in your role, this session will provide practical guidance and real-world examples.

Open Data Week 10 to 14 November 2025

The Open Research team will play host to the second Open Data Week at LJMU, running from Monday 10 to Friday 14 November 2025.

This week-long event celebrates the transformative potential of open data and responsible research practices in today’s evolving research landscape.

Building on the success of last year’s event, Open Data Week 2025 will feature a dynamic mix of presentations, workshops, and drop-in sessions, designed to support researchers, postgraduate researchers (PGRs), and research support staff in navigating the world of data management and open research.
