New social media guidelines for staff
To help colleagues navigate social media effectively, the university has published updated social media guidelines for staff and secondary accounts. The guidelines support staff with understanding social platforms, key considerations, potential challenges and best practice when using platforms and managing secondary accounts.
LJMU network of secondary accounts
The university has more than 50 secondary accounts, managed by staff across the university that use LJMU in the name or handle. This includes LJMU services, schools, faculties and subject clusters.
To strengthen risk management and ensure business continuity, we’re asking relevant staff to provide the login details for current LJMU secondary accounts. This ensures the university can maintain access to critical platforms, respond quickly to incidents, and meet compliance requirements.
Corporate Communications will be in touch with each registered secondary account manager via LJMU email to gather logins and store them centrally in our protected password vault.
Managing a secondary social media account requires a dedicated commitment. And takes time, resource, and meticulous planning.
New social media accounts can only be created for LJMU departments, faculties, schools, or services once staff have approval from the relevant Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Corporate Communications.
You can read through further information on key considerations for social media management, understanding the different platforms, dealing with negativity online on our social media guidelines.
Got a question about using social media?
Strategic social media use can enhance the university's reputation, increase its visibility, showcase research and achievements and enhance partnership and collaboration, on a local, national, and international scale. However, poor use of social media on secondary accounts, unprofessional content or lack of engagement from an account can damage credibility and negatively impact the university’s reputation with key stakeholders.
The guidelines provide further information on safety and security, planning, and potential challenges when using social media.
The Corporate Communications team manages all corporate social media accounts (Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn, Bluesky and Threads) and supports colleagues with secondary LJMU accounts.
If you have any further questions about social media or an LJMU account after reading the guidelines, please contact the Corporate Communications team.
LJMU social media policies for staff and students
The university has recently updated the Social Media Policies for both staff and students.
The policies, available on the LJMU Policy Centre outline key areas including LJMU’s principles, and sets out further guidance regarding social media.
Staff can access the staff social media policy and student social media policy.
