Why International relations and politics at LJMU?

Hey everyone! I am Sarah, a second-year (nearly third) student who studies International relations and politics. I want to spend this blog telling you the reasons why I think international relations and politics at LJMU is the best!

1. The modules

I personally have an interest in a diverse range of politics and LJMU offers so many module choices, from Scandinavian politics, British politics, challenging Western centrism and territorial politics

2. The lecturers

I honestly believe I have hit the jackpot in terms of lecturers. They are all very friendly, supportive and obviously knowledgeable. They each have their own specialist area and are always more than happy to help you find out more about it.

3. Loads of assignment support

At LJMU , you obviously have your lecturers to go to for help with essay content or structure, but you also have the academic achievement team. To summarise their job, it is to basically advise students on how to improve grammar, punctuation and structure. I found the team so helpful, especially if like me, it's not the content you find hard but the academic writing style.

4. Guaranteed Accommodation for first years

I came to LJMU with a clearing and was so stressed about finding accommodation, but if LJMU is your firm choice, you are guaranteed accommodation in an LJMU-approved place for the first year of your course. I honestly cannot state enough how helpful this is.

5. Varied assignments

The way that the course is assessed is so varied that there is something that everyone can excel in. For example, in the protest and communication module in first year 50% of the grade is a portfolio of political artefacts, then there's a simulation in the second year in British politics module where we had to pretend to be leaders of a British political party.

6. Food incentives

Yes, we get free Domino’s... enough said

7. Peer mentor schemes

New this year is a peer mentor scheme, whereby third years mentor first and foundation years. As a mentor myself, we are here to guide you academically but also personally and act as your course older sibling and help you learn from our mistakes.

8. Supportive atmosphere

From the lecturers, to the support staff and students, there is a nice vibe to the course, it is relatively small about 60 people pear year, but this means your optional modules feel focused and that you get a lot of attention from your lecturers and also get the chance to work in groups with lots of people.

Anyway, I hope you found this helpful - remember you can contact me on Unibuddy or CampusConnect if you need any more information!
