As the name of our Faculty indicates, we have a range of disciplines which are complementary and coherent in approach. We look for points of synergy across our portfolio to bring themes together to harness our research potential. We also look to develop meaningful partnerships and to introduce new programmes.
Our current research and curriculum is world-leading. We are ambitious to build upon our strengths to drive even greater success for the Faculty and for the university.
The School of Nursing and Advanced Practice has been committed to advancing developments in health and social care for over 25 years, tracing our origins back to 1991 when the Liverpool School of Nursing and Midwifery joined with Liverpool Polytechnic. Today, we continue to strive to tackle health inequalities, social exclusion, and deprivation in local communities (and beyond) through our undergraduate and postgraduate curricula and a growing programme of international partnerships. The School of Public and Allied Health is comprised of programmes in midwifery, paramedicine, health and social care, social work and public health with a thriving public health research environment.
The School of Nursing and Advanced Practice has a staff of 145 and 1964 students consisting of 1640 undergraduate and 324 postgraduate students (including 27 postgraduate research students). The School of Public and Allied Health has a staff of 46 and 761 students consisting of 420 undergraduate, 341 postgraduate students (including 30 postgraduate research students).
The wider Faculty comprises 11 Schools and Institutes with remarkable staff who go above and beyond for our students. We are proud of the role we play in driving innovation for the city region, our national presence and global reach. We are renowned for our open and happy community. Diversity is valued; endeavour is supported and achievement is celebrated.
This is an exciting time to join the university. We are delivering the LJMU Strategy 2030, which sets out our vision of LJMU as an inclusive civic university that transforms lives and futures. At the heart of this vision is our commitment to putting students first in everything we do.
If you feel that this is the role you have been looking for and your skills and experience can make a real difference at LJMU, we look forward to hearing from you.
Student focused, inclusive, courageous and caring about our community. Welcome to LJMU.
For the past 200 years, we’ve been the university for the people of Liverpool. We are raising people up and championing change. We work in partnership with individuals and organisations to make a difference. Our students are always at the heart of everything we do. It’s why we’re one of the largest and well-established universities in the UK.
Now, in 2025, our influence goes far beyond our city. It’s over 28,000 students studying with us on campus or at one of our 25 institutional partners across the globe. It's the thousands of people who have access to the world’s largest telescope, making a career exploring the universe, feel like it's within touching distance.
It's the young girl in Nepal who knows our name as our research projects help to address the stigma of period shame. It’s our graduates that go on to win Grammys, use their investigative journalistic skills to expose injustice. Others win Olympic medals and then return to our lecture theatres to teach the next generation what they know about sport science.
While we strive to make a difference across the globe, our deep bond with the city we call home drives much of what we do. It's why we offer free legal and business advice from our campus clinics to local people. It's why our nursing, teaching and policing degree apprenticeships provide vital skills and graduates to our schools, hospitals and employers. It's also why our spirit of adventure and innovation is focused on giving back to local communities. We aim to reach individuals who never thought higher education was possible for them.
Making a difference is what a university should be about. But LJMU isn’t just any university, it’s a place where our students, staff, alumni, partners and community belong.
About our university
We can trace our roots back to the early 1800s, during the Industrial Revolution. The Liverpool Mechanics’ Institute was established. Early lectures and classes covered the arts, humanities and philosophy. We also focused on technology, engineering and the science of medicine and physiology.
Back then, we pioneered opportunities for female students in pharmacy and physical education. Today, LJMU continues to champion inclusivity and diversity.
In 2024, we achieved Athena Swan Silver accreditation for our commitment to advancing gender equality. We also received the Race Equality Charter Bronze award for our work eliminating racial inequalities and developing an inclusive culture.
That same year, we were ranked in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings’ top 400 universities for the first time. This highlighted our commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. It recognised the research and practices we’re developing to support a more sustainable and prosperous future for local communities and the wider world.
LJMU is currently ranked 49th out of 129 Higher Education Institutions in the UK for ‘research power’. We have world-leading research taking place in every faculty.
In the latest REF 2021 result we have more than doubled the amount of research that is judged to be world-leading or internationally-excellent.
We recognise LJMU is already a great place to work. As we work towards the LJMU 2030 strategy, our People Plan highlights the next stage in our commitment to our staff, with six key strategic themes:
- attraction and retention
- performance and development
- impactful leadership and communications
- adaptive culture
- health, wellbeing, and safety
- diversity and inclusion
Our vision when it comes to our people
By 2030, the university will be more diverse and inclusive no matter which part of LJMU you work in. The culture will support every employee to be comfortable to be their true selves at work. It will continue to be a safe place where health and wellbeing is a priority, and innovation is the norm.
Our teams will be adaptive to change, and performance and agility will go hand in hand. Our values will be truly embedded, and autonomous teams will be trusted and empowered to lead and deliver.
We will regularly hear of people having courageous conversations and challenging the status quo. This will help us to improve the student experience, strengthen impactful research, and refine the way we work.
People in leadership roles will be highly visible and accessible to their teams. They will create a supportive, inclusive environment where all team members stay informed through regular face-to-face time with their leaders. This will encourage open, two-way dialogue.
Leaders will set clear performance expectations by using SMART objectives. They will hold regular reviews to assess progress and provide timely feedback to help individuals reach their goals.
Career pathways will be clear and supported by strong development plans, giving everyone the tools to reach their full potential. Staff will feel valued and engaged. Business continuity will be strengthened by robust succession planning. This will allow us to grow and support the next generation of LJMU leaders.
As a result, we will see real improvements in the student experience, research, and innovation. Strategic skills gaps will be closed. Teaching will be excellent, and students will learn from engaging, inspirational academic staff. All technical and professional services staff will understand how their role supports the student experience. They will take pride in contributing to LJMU’s vision and success in the city, across the country and around the world.
LJMU will be one of the best universities to work for because everyone will be proud to work here. Staff will celebrate LJMU on their own channels and we will become the employer of choice in both Higher Education, and the Liverpool City Region.
