Using AI

LJMU recognises that generative AI can enhance learning, but students should use it responsibly and ethically and always follow the specific instructions provided for their course and assessments.

Students must follow the AI permissions stated in each assessment brief, as the use of AI outside those instructions may be treated as academic misconduct.

Work submitted for assessment must be the student's own, with sources appropriately acknowledged and any permitted use of generative AI carried out in accordance with the assessment instructions.

Where AI use is permitted, students must appropriately acknowledge its use and confirm at submission that their work complies with LJMU's requirements for generative AI and academic integrity.

Students should use AI responsibly and understand its potential limitations and risks, including bias, inaccurate information, inappropriate content and wider ethical issues.

LJMU highlights that generative AI can produce inaccurate or biased information, meaning students remain responsible for the accuracy and integrity of work they submit.

Students should not upload material from academic resources, including text, images, tables or graphs, into commercially available or third-party generative AI tools.

Personally identifiable information must not be submitted to generative AI tools, and users should be mindful of data protection considerations when using AI systems.

Students should refer to LJMU's approved resources and guidance when selecting AI tools, including AI functionality made available through LJMU Library resources.

Students can access LJMU guidance and learning resources to help them understand appropriate and responsible use of generative AI within their studies.

Staff should ensure that expectations around generative AI are clearly incorporated into assessment, with students expected to comply with the instructions provided within their assessment brief.

Guidance on the appropriate use of AI within Professional Services is currently being developed through the AI Academy. Staff should continue to follow existing LJMU policies and requirements relevant to their work.

Further guidance and examples demonstrating appropriate uses of AI to support productivity are being developed through the AI Academy.

Information about AI tools available or approved for Professional Services use will be provided as University guidance develops. Staff should not assume that a publicly available AI tool is approved for university information or data.

AI skills and training opportunities for staff are being developed and coordinated through the AI Academy, with information on available development opportunities to be brought together through the Academy website.

AI should be used in a way that maintains LJMU's standards of research ethics and integrity. Further guidance specifically addressing the use of AI throughout the research lifecycle is being developed through the AI Academy and relevant University teams.

Researchers are expected to maintain honesty, accountability and good research practice and comply with LJMU's policies governing research and knowledge exchange.

The use of AI within research must continue to comply with the ethical, legal and professional frameworks applicable to LJMU research. Researchers should consult the relevant University guidance where there is uncertainty about the use of AI within a research project.

Researchers should manage research data appropriately and in accordance with LJMU's Research and Knowledge Exchange Data Management Policy, including requirements concerning data management, retention and associated rights.

Further AI-specific guidance on research data will be provided as institutional guidance develops.

Researchers should follow applicable LJMU, funder, publisher and research-integrity requirements regarding disclosure and acknowledgement. Further University guidance specifically addressing disclosure of AI use should be added here as it becomes available.

Researchers should consult LJMU's Research Integrity resources, which bring together university policies, guidance and training relating to responsible research practice.

AI-related research should operate within LJMU's wider commitment to high-quality, ethical research and knowledge exchange, with researchers directed to appropriate Research and Innovation Services support where required.
