  4. Contexts of human evolution

    Research within the Contexts of Human Evolution Group involves archaeological, palaeontological and environmental analyses of human evolution. Our research focuses on mammalian evolution, hominin behaviour and ecology, and patterns of faunal and floral distribution.   5. Human variation and adaptability

    Through the fields of palaeoanthropology, bioarchaeology, palaeogenetics, evolutionary genetics and human biology - we study human variation. Discover more about human variation and adaptability, the projects we are currently working on, read our papers, and meet the researchers.

  6. Social behaviour, ecology and conservation

    Our interest lies in the evolution of animal societies and the interactions that occur within these societies and their link to emotion, cognition and communication. We primarily study primates (including humans) but also other species including birds.     The Public Health Institute's expertise lies in the subject areas: drugs, tobacco, alcohol, population health, violence and unintentional injury, sexual and reproductive health, international public health, intelligence and surveillance, and the environment and sustainability.

  9. Environment and sustainability

    At the Public Health Institute we provide advice to policymakers in consideration of the relationship between the environment and public health. Projects include: the use of parks, climate change, economic benefits of green infrastructure and evaluation of green projects for the community.

  10. Intelligence and surveillance

    The Public Health Institute's data collection and monitoring systems support public health reporting. Our surveillance systems include: Integrated Monitoring System, Trauma and Injury Intelligence Group, HIV Surveillance and the Drug Interventions Programme.
