Jessy Taylor - Discovery Internship Case Study

Media, Culture, Communication student Jessy Taylor, who graduates in 2025, talks about her Discovery Internship as a Communications Intern at Liverpool Football Club.

Why did you want to do a Discovery internship?

Gain experience from an internal perspective and build a strong network.

Where did you find out about the internship?

At an alumni event.

Describe the role you are undertaking and your main duties:

I help with writing press releases for events occurring at the club as well as putting together coverage reports and assisting with matchday itineraries. However my main role is to help where I can with progressing the footfall at the Liverpool FC Women’s games.

What did the application and selection process involve, and how did you prepare for each stage?

It involved creating a strong, adapted CV as well as completing an application form which included relevant experience. I made sure to look at the job description to help adapt my answers.

The final stage was an in person competency based interview. To prepare for this I utilised the interview resources in the Careers Zone and built my answers using the STAR method.

What relevant work experience / skills / volunteering / Student Union activities did you use during the selection process?

My part time job, as I help run the social media for a small company. I took a physical copy of the progress I had made after taking over the account with me to the interview. This was in the form of an analytics report, which seems to be quite similar to what I have been helping out with lately in the coverage reports. They seemed to really appreciate this.

What advice would you give to other students to improve their employability?

Experience is so essential! Make your application stand out with relevant experience and relate to the brief. Also build your network, reach out and email contacts and just have a conversation.

If nothing comes from it, it is still better for your name to be known to individuals in the industry.

Would you do anything differently in terms of your employability if you were a first-year student again?

Not really, I think definitely doing an internship during final year has helped my confidence grow for my journey into the industry.

Is there any other advice or experiences you would like to mention?

Don’t feel cheeky asking for experience. An opportunity is an opportunity at the end of the day, most employers will be more impressed with your tenacity and drive to learn. Work hard and get your foot in the door! It will benefit you in the long run.
