Richard Murray completed a Professional Doctorate of Sport and Exercise Psychology and now runs his own sport psychology consultancy, Unfiltered Sporting Minds Ltd.
What does your business do?
Unfiltered Sporting Minds is a Sport Psychology consultancy. You can find out more on my IG page.
How did you get the idea to start your business?
My PhD supervisor has his own consultancy, and it is a typical pathway for practitioners in this field.
How did the Start-Up Hub help and support you?
Tom from the Hub helped me set up business in the beginning. He has helped with planning the business model(s) as well as teaching me the lingo and introducing me to important business concepts. I genuinely couldn’t have done it without him. Since then, I have had many meetings discussing the plans of my business going forward - basically when I start to earn lots more!
What has been the best thing about starting your business?
I love being my own boss and not having to listen to others.
What is the best thing about doing business in the Liverpool City Region?
I love that football is a language here and everyone wants to improve.
What was your biggest challenge in getting started up?
Getting into the right rooms around launch time and being with people who know what they’re on about!
What advice would you give to an LJMU student thinking of starting their own business?
Do it for sure!!! You may as well start it now and do little bits when you can - rather than do it all at once!
Are there any exciting plans for the future you can share with us?
I am planning to launch a business model where I am having professional players on a retainer and have access to me on WhatsApp and a psych session every week - something novel in the domain.
