About our teacher training programme

LJMU gives you more

LJMU is one of a small number of universities offering a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE). Like the traditional Postgraduate Certificate in Education, the PGDE leads to Qualified Teacher Status, however it also incorporates 120 Masters-level credits as part of the training year, based on assessments closely linked to classroom practice. The PGDE can be completed over the same time frame as PGCE, for the same cost. As the course has more Masters credits than a PGCE, graduates can undertake and complete a full Masters degree more easily while working, should you wish to further your professional development.

Qualified Teacher Status

All of our Initial Teacher Training (ITT) programmes are accredited by the National College of Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) and students who successfully complete our PGDE programmes graduate with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). QTS is the essential accreditation for anyone who wants to teach in state-maintained and special schools in England and Wales. It demonstrates that you have acquired the competencies and qualities required to be an effective teacher as determined by the Government’s Teachers’ Standards 2011.

Our graduates progress in teaching

The employment rates for our graduates are high:

  • 89% of our primary school direct graduates are in a teaching post within six months of completing their course
  • 95% of our secondary graduates are in a teaching post within six months of completing their course
  • employment rates are particularly strong in secondary English, drama/dance, modern languages, history and PE

Links with schools

We have longstanding links with local authorities, schools and professional subject associations enabling our students to gain varied professional experience and forge useful contacts within the sector. Our educational partnerships provide vital insights into current practice which, when combined with ongoing research and consultancy undertaken by the School, helps to ensure our PGDE programmes and subject-specific curricula are up-to-date and professionally relevant.

Supporting newly qualified teachers

We believe that it is important to maintain strong links with our alumni as they enter their first years in the profession and to continue to support their development. We are doing this through the development of professional support and accredited programmes for NQTs and RQTs.

An Initial Teacher Training Partnership that works

The LJMU ITT Partnership is making great strides in redefining the contribution of schools to its initial teacher training programmes. We engage schools at all levels from strategic planning to programme development and the selection of trainees.

We provide high quality support for school based training due to our strong relationships and support for mentors in schools.

Building a strong profession

We offer a variety of opportunities for teachers and school leaders to define and extend their skills through practice based professional learning programmes.

Our Masters programmes offer the opportunity to develop specialist knowledge and skills through study that is closely linked to the school and classroom. We are able to tailor programmes to partner’s specific needs with delivery of both Masters level programmes and shorter courses on school premises.

Free support sessions for 2018 Firm offer holders

All those following an ITE programme are required to pass skills tests in numeracy and literacy by sitting an online test at a Learn Direct Test Centre.

In order to support you in successfully completing your numeracy test we are offering free support sessions to everyone who have been offered a place to study teacher training with us or one of our School Direct partners commencing in 2018.

Held at our IM Marsh Campus, the sessions are intended to assist applicants who have unsuccessfully made a first attempt at the numeracy test or have failed the available practice tests and are thus concerned at their potential to successfully pass without support. 

We highly recommend that you attempt the numeracy test or practice tests before making a decision as to whether you need to attend the support sessions.
